Bonnie Schneider
After graduating with having a Bachelor of Music (Boston University 1963) and then observing liberal arts education as professor (Brown University, 1971-75) Now, I am convinced of the benefits of an integrated approach to learning that includes the study of music alongside the study of other disciplines. It's not unusual for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! The program I am in, ethnomusicology, that began from UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is comfortably located in a music department in a College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple subjects is something I like. Undergraduates as well as graduate students (for whom I wrote three texts - Music in India, The Classical Traditions of India, Thinking Musically: Music in Japan - Experimenting Music and expressing Cultural Expression) are enthused by my teaching. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods that are primarily academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I was Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as Chair of the College of Letters and Science Deans from 1994 to 1998; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, I am currently Chair of Department of Music).
